Soy Candle Care: How to Get the Best Burn From Every Salty Dog Candle

A Few Habits That Get You Every Hour

Soy candle care is a little different from the big-box stuff, and a couple of habits will get you every one of the 40 to 50 hours in an 8.5 oz Salty Dog candle. This is the guide that goes in every box, so if you’ve got a candle in front of you, you’re in the right place!

Before Your First Burn

Your wick comes trimmed and ready. Before you light it:

•  After the first burn, trim the wick to 1/4 inch before every burn

•  Set the candle on a heat-resistant surface

•  Keep it away from drafts, fans, and open windows

•  Keep it away from kids and pets

The First Burn Matters

The first burn decides how your candle behaves for the rest of its life. Let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the jar before you put it out. That usually takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the candle. Soy wax remembers its first melt pool, so a short first burn is where tunneling starts. And never burn for more than 4 hours at a time.

While It Burns

Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches, and anything else that falls in. If the flame gets tall or starts to flicker hard, put it out, trim the wick, and relight. And don’t move a candle while the wax is melted; hot wax and a wobbly jar are a bad combination.

Tunneling: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Tunneling is when the wick burns straight down the middle and leaves a ring of hard wax around the edge. It happens when the first burn was cut short. Here’s the fix:

1.  Give the candle one long burn, 3 to 4 hours, so the pool can spread.

2.  If the ring is stubborn, loosely wrap a collar of foil around the top of the jar with the center open, then burn. The trapped heat melts the edges back down.

3.  Once the top is level again, go back to normal burns and it won’t come back.

Why Soy Candles Look Different Sometimes

Frosting, those white, crystal-looking patches on soy wax, is completely natural and doesn’t change how the candle burns or smells. Small-batch pours also vary a little in color and texture from one candle to the next. Both are normal for a hand poured candle and neither is a defect, which is why our return and refund policy treats them that way.

The Last Half Inch

When to Stop

Stop burning when about 1/2 inch of wax is left in the bottom of the jar. Burning past that can overheat the glass. That last half inch isn’t wasted either, see the questions below.

How to Put It Out

Use a snuffer when you can. Blowing straight into the wax sends soot and hot wax where you don’t want it. No snuffer? Cup your hand behind the flame and blow gently across it, not down at it.

Candle Care Questions

How long does a Salty Dog candle burn?

About 40 to 50 hours for an 8.5 oz candle, with a trimmed wick and full burns. Cut the first burn short and you’ll lose some of that to tunneling.

Can I reuse the jar?

Please do! Once you hit the last 1/2 inch, pop the candle in the freezer for an hour and the leftover wax lifts out in one piece. Wash the jar with warm soapy water, peel the wick tab, and it’s a glass for the kitchen or a home for pens. The blown glass jar on Vampire Blood is worth keeping around!

Why is the top of my candle uneven after burning?

Usually a draft, a fan, or a wick that needed a trim. Level it out with one full burn and it should settle.

Why does the scent seem lighter some days?

Soy throws scent best in a smaller room with the door closed and no fan running. Give it 30 to 45 minutes to fill the space.
